Going first

Sometimes it is up to you to go first.

There might not be an example you can follow. Your idea might be just that—YOUR idea. So you have to do it.

Often when you work out what your Thing is you look around for examples of other people doing it so you can see how it’s done, or see how you want to do it differently, to make sure you stand out.

If you’re not excited, it’s probably not your Thing…

There are some things that I don’t wake up in the morning **dying to do**: spreadsheets, for example (not my first choice in expressing myself). But when I know I’m doing my Thing, or working on a Thing that I know is a great Thing, I’ll be excited about them, and if my excitement extends as far as a spreadsheet, I know I must be onto something brilliant.

Strictly Business

I don’t mind admitting it. I am a HUGE Strictly Come Dancing Fan (Dancing with the Stars if you’re reading this outside the UK). Obviously I am sure you appreciate that I love the sparkles and the spotlights (of course!) but what I love the most is the dedication and the trust that you see.

Every one of the celebrities is already doing their Thing (and up to the point of starting the series that Thing isn’t ballroom dancing, and for some – let’s be honest – it never will be!) but everyone is willing to give dancing a go and be a beginner.

I don’t mind if you don’t get it

I have learnt (like every good lesson—the hard way!) to not try and ‘convince’ anyone.

In fact, these days I’ll often make it very clear that if someone is absolutely convinced that what I am saying makes no sense and will never ever ever work I’m cool about it. Of course, I let them know I think that’s not correct and suggest (politely, of course!) that they can tell that to all my clients and a whole bunch of other people who it is working for and see if they remain convinced. But I don’t mind.
