I'd like to be able to tell you that everything that happens in business is all very organised and proper and happens as part of a process. And it does—most of the time. But sometimes you have to take chances and see opportunities for what they really are. And sometimes they won't make perfect sense but you just know they are what you have to do.
Now you might know that I am a little bit 'woo woo' when it comes to business, and while I do of course insist on numbers adding up and having a star plan in place, etc. I also very much believe in trusting my intuition—my gut feel. I'll see an event or opportunity, or meet someone, and 'know' right away if it's right for me. Same with clients, programs and pretty much everything in my business.
Sometimes this gut feel will not stack up against logical business arguments and this is where it's about taking a chance.
When did you last do that?
If you're running your own business which you started from the beginning then that's a good example of a chance taken right there. Even if you followed a template or bought a franchise, it's still down to you to make that business a success. It's a chance on you.
I always tell business celebrities that they need to back themselves. I don't mean this in the sense of a gamble, but in the sense of trust.
When you trust who you are and what you do that's brilliant (your Thing) then it's not so much about taking a chance... instead, it's an opportunity.
Any opportunity you have to do your Thing that feels right—take it.
Taking a chance on you should be the safest bet you can make. Obviously you then have to get out there and ride in the race (you can't hide in the stables) but you know what you can do. Even if you haven't done it yet, you'll know if it's possible.
Don't throw your business logic away, but also don't turn down opportunities without at least seeing if there is a chance they can work. Then, if it feels right... Take a chance. That next meeting that doesn't make sense but you 'know' you have to be at will show its reason why in time...
