Do you slam the door shut as soon as you open it?

Marketing isn’t a one-off action. You don’t ‘do’ marketing once and then decide it’s done and either worked or didn’t. Marketing is a wave of activity—it’s consistent and ongoing. The same goes for making offers—you don’t always have a mad rush sell-out the second you open the ‘shop door’.

The other day, Gary Vaynerchuk posted a great thing on Facebook which was along the lines of: “If this is your life’s work, don’t give up after 4 months”. And I’m sure you’ve read before about the ‘overnight’ success of people who have, in fact, been working away for years.

Are you selling a cake or a recipe?

Here’s what I see a lot… people marketing recipes: the ingredients for a cake – the step by step pieces you need.

But what a cake lover is more interested in is the finished article – what a cake lover buys is a CAKE! I get a lot more excited looking at a slice of carrot cake than I do a bag of flour, eggs, sugar, some carrots, a wooden spoon… and yet this is what I see a lot of people are ‘selling’ – the ingredients.

If your Thing is something ‘new’ or a new angle on some-thing,then you may need to teach your audience about it. This is NOT the same as preaching to them about it.

So set out your classroom and educate your pupils so they see for themselves your Thing is an answer.

I can’t be bothered being anyone other than me.

Talk about hard work.

But I still catch myself changing my tone, or coming over all ‘marketing’ sometimes. And I think WHOA what is that all about? Why am I being someone else when I do my marketing, or start talking about my Thing.

Waaaaay too much like hard work keeping that up.
