I’m not a good rehearser. I can ‘run through’ things, but to do an ‘as perfect’ performance without an audience I find really tough. That’s not to say I don’t prepare–and I don’t recommend you don’t either–but be OK that the ‘first time’ might be the first time.

The Joy of Small

Being small is a very good thing when it comes to doing your Thing.

If your business is just you then you’ve only got yourself to consult when it comes to decisions. There’s a lot to be said for that (if you can make a decision, of course!).

Some of my client’s have ‘Things’ that help bigger organisations communicate better, and be more effective in their meetings which tells you what it’s like when you get big. It’s easy to be effective when it’s just you. So don’t do yourself a disservice and discuss things over and over in your head—just decide and do.

Ban the brochure speak! (& 10 tips on how to avoid it)

I can’t stand brochure speak.

You know that beautifully crafted tidy copy that is full of neat words and clever phrases and lots of ‘we’: “Jargon jargon jargon ‘we’ do this and we’ve been doing this for 1000 years and we are the best…”

That is brochure speak. And you’ll find it out and about not just in brochures but it lurks on websites and flyers and adverts and sales & marketing materials across the land.

Belief.

Honestly, this is what makes the difference.

Yes, having great, compelling copy will help. Yes, having a clear offer and packages that show what’s possible works. It’s important you say clearly what it is you can do for people. It’s also important that you have a way for people to try you out, or connect with you. But above everything is belief.
